Blessed Are The Pure in Heart

In light of my dear grandmother's passing, I decided that this week's article would delve into her favorite scripture:

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." - Matthew 5:8

What does it mean to be "pure in heart"?

The word pure is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as a substance or material that has not been mixed with or adulterated with any other substance. Also, free of any contamination.

Generally speaking, most people would associate the word purity with a life free from sexual immorality however, the concept of purity goes beyond just sexual sin or moral failure. It can also refer to being free from any form of corruption or impurity, both in thoughts and actions. In a spiritual sense, purity can be achieved through following the teachings and commandments of Jesus, rather than just adhering to a set of rules. Ultimately, purity is about striving for a state of moral and ethical perfection, both in our outward actions and inner thoughts.

This is in stark contrast to the religious leaders of the time who were more concerned with outward appearances and following the letter of the law. Jesus emphasized the importance of having a pure heart, one that is fully devoted to God and free from hypocrisy. He taught that true purity comes from within, not from performing external rituals. This message is still relevant today, reminding us to prioritize our inner intentions and relationship with God above outward displays of religiosity.

He wanted to emphasize that true blessings come from following God's will and not from material possessions or worldly successes. Jesus also warned that living a life according to God's teachings may bring struggles and challenges, as it goes against the values of the world. However, he encouraged His followers to persevere and trust in God's plan, knowing that ultimate happiness and fulfillment come from a life devoted to God.

As previously mentioned, this promise is not about earthly possessions or success, but rather about a spiritual reward. Jesus emphasized the importance of inner purity and spiritual growth, rather than societal norms and external measures of success. By focusing on being pure in heart, individuals can cultivate a closer relationship with God and experience the ultimate reward of seeing Him in heaven.

This concept challenges traditional beliefs about the afterlife and the nature of God. It suggests that in the kingdom of heaven, the barriers between humans and God will be broken down, allowing for a deeper and more personal relationship. This promise also serves as a source of hope and motivation for those seeking to live a pure and devoted life, knowing that they will one day see God in all His glory.

It is important to recognize that being pure in heart does not mean being completely free from sin. As humans, we are inherently flawed and will continue to sin throughout our lives. However, through our faith in Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can strive to live a life that is pure and pleasing to God. This involves constantly seeking God's guidance and forgiveness, and making a conscious effort to put Him above all else in our thoughts, words, and actions. Though we may stumble and fall, God's grace and forgiveness are always available to guide us towards a pure heart.

Being pure in heart will draw us closer to God and allow us to live a life full of purpose and meaning. Putting God first also helps us to remain humble and grateful, remembering that all blessings come from Him. It's important to constantly seek His will and to share His love and glory with others, as it is through this selfless act that we truly reflect His love and light to the world. And even if we stumble and fall, God's grace and forgiveness are always there to lift us up and guide us back onto the right path.

My dear brothers and sisters, if you are struggling with double-mindedness and being fully devoted to God, I urge you to seriously consider surrendering to him. Fully and completely. There are many of us who appear “holy”, whose private lives don’t align with that of a TRUE believer of Jesus Christ. Let us not be as the Pharisees, who were more concerned about appearances rather than sincere communion with our Creator. Time is running out. Heed the reminder that our life is but a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes. Furthermore, isn’t the Creator of the heavens and earth worth enough to receive your complete allegiance?

I pray that you meditate on these words and allow them resonate with you. As my grandmother would say:  “Don’t throw it out of your mind. — Toss it and turn it around.”

Hypocrisy, dishonesty, malice, and unrighteousness will keep us separated from our Creator forever. Are you willing to risk it?
